PILE DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION PRACTICE

Published in the Taylor & Francis
ISBN 0-203-96429-2
© 1977, 1987, 1994, 2008 Michael Tomlinson and John Woodward

Book Description,
The increased adoption of piling is not only due to the availability of more efficient mechanical equipment. Developments in analytical methods of calculating bearing capacity and dynamic methods for load and integrity testing have resulted in greater assurance of sound long-term performance. Further economies in foundation and superstructure design are now possible because of the increased ability to predict movements of piles under load, thus allowing engineers to adopt with confidence the concept of redistribution of load between piles with consequent savings in overall pile lengths and cross-sectional dimensions, as described in this new edition. Since the publication of the fourth edition of this book, Eurocode 7, Geotechnical Design, has been issued. As the name implies this code does not deal with all aspects of foundation design; there are extensive cross-references to other Eurocodes dealing with such matters as the general basis of design and the properties of constructional materials. The Code does not cover foundation design and particularly construction as comprehensively as the present British Standard 8004 Foundations, and the British National Annex to Eurocode 7 is yet to be published. The authors have endeavoured to co-ordinate the principles of both codes in this
new book.

PILE DESIGN FOR STRUCTURAL AND GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING

Ruwan Rajapakse, CCM, CCE, PE

Book Description,
Pile design is mostly about application of engineering concepts rather than use of elaborate mathematical techniques. Most pile design work can be done with simple arithmetic. I have provided necessary equations and concepts in a manner so that the reader would be able to refer to them with ease. All chapters are provided with plethora of design examples. The solutions to design examples are given in a step by step basis with many illustrations. In geotechnical engineering, formulas and methodologies change significantly from sandy soils to clay soils. I made all attempts to separate equations based on soil type. Different pile types also would affect the design methods used. As often the case, one may find mixed soil conditions. I have provided necessary theory and design examples to tackle pile design in mixed soil conditions. This book is mainly aimed at practicing geotechnical engineers, graduate and undergraduate students who are planning to become geotechnical engineers. The book should be a great addition to the civil professional engineer exam in USA or the chartered engineer exam in commonwealth countries. This book would also be of interest to structural engineers and architects who may run into piling work occasionally.

© 1977, 1981, 1987 Palladian, 1991, 1994 E & FN Spon

Book Description,
In this edition the chapters dealing with methods of calculating the bearing capacity and settlements of piles and pile groups have been extensively revised to take account of recent research and development on this subject. A draft of Euro code No. 7, Geotechnics, had been completed at the time of preparing this edition. Reference is made to the draft requirements of the Euro code in the chapters dealing with the design of single piles and pile groups. Generally the descriptions of types of pile, piling equipment and methods of installation have been brought up-to-date with current practice and a new section has been added on piled foundations for bridges.

Book Description,
This book presents the latest methodological developments in soil-landscape modeling. It provides a cross-section of many recently developed measurement tools, as well as computer-related and pedometric techniques that are instrumental for soil-landscape modeling. It also contains in-depth reviews of the history of soil-landscape modeling, thus presenting views from soil geography, soil genesis, and soil geomorphology. I consider this one of the strong points of this book. Quantitative soil-landscape modeling will only be successful if it is a joint venture between various disciplines within soil science, notably soil geography, soil genesis, and pedometrics. It is reassuring to see work from reputable soil scientists with such diverse backgrounds in soil science united in this book.

ISBN-10 0-511-22493-1
© Rosemary Lyster, Adrian Bradbrook 2006

Book Description,
After an overview of energy production and use in Australia (Chapter 1) and a consideration of the available alternative renewable energy and energy conservation technologies (Chapter 2), the book examines systematically the relevant international law (Chapter 3), the role of the recently restructured electricity and gas industries in Australia (Chapter 4), and Commonwealth and State laws and policies (Chapters 5 and 6). It concludes in Chapter 7 with a consideration of future developments in domestic and international law that would be needed to make energy policies truly consistent with sustainable development. Even a cursory reading of this book should be enough to show that much remains to be done in the legal and policy area. The authors wish to make the point forcefully that energy is one of the most important sectors demanding legislative attention in environmental matters, for without reforms in this sector sustainable development cannot be achieved.

Book Description,
In the editors’ preface to the fourth edition it was noted that there was good news and there was bad news. It is the same for this, the fifth edition. One suspects that this will always be the case. The 2004 Nobel Prize for Peace has been awarded to Professor Dr. Wangari Maathai. Dr. Maathai’s award was based on her efforts on behalf of conservation and women’s rights. These efforts were made at great personal risk. In addition, the Kyoto Protocol has been ratified by the requisite number of countries. The bad news is that some developed nations have declined to join this global effort. It is to be hoped that, in time, these countries will change their policies. Protection of the environment is an ongoing struggle, and it is incumbent on all citizens of the planet to join in protecting the only home that we have.

Book Description,
This book was written to improve the fundamental dissemination of knowledge. It has no pretensions to replace the standard textbooks and the learned journals on pediatric oncology. In this new edition contributions by specialist nurses and a child psychiatrist and psychooncologist considerably improve the all-round coverage. The remaining chapters systematically describe the various disease groups. Some of these chapters, together with a new chapter on emergencies in pediatric oncology, were written by Thomas Kühne, for many years my trusted colleague. Robert Arceci of Johns Hopkins, Baltimore, editor-in-chief of ”Pediatric Blood and Cancer,” brought his vast experience to bear on the English translation.

Book Descrption,
The third edition follows 20 years after our initial offering. It updates the technology of pediatric imaging. It is designed for medical students and residents in both pediatrics and radiology, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and all who take care of children. This edition gets us back to basics with a new chapter on the effects of radiation in children. It deals more with what to order and why. The proliferation of imaging techniques is not a good thing if imaging replaces superb history taking, good physical examination, and excellent clinical judgment.

Book Description,
The idea for this book a r m from a short course the authors have been giving at the University of Kent annually since 1974, to an audience consisting mainly of schoolteachers. The course has several aims, but one of the most important is to give the participants guided experience in solving problems in statistics. We have found that many people have a passing acquaintance with the various concepts encountered in a typical introductory statistics course for those with a basic knowledge of calculus: the sort of course which in Britain might be given to sixth-form mathematicians or to first year undergraduates. By contrast, people usually have little experience in applying the concepts in practical examples, and hence lack confidence. These attributes of experience and confidence are vital to teachers and students >like, and since they can be gained most effectively by working through examples, we feel that a book of worked solutions to problems, containing many notes and comments, will be found to be of value.

Book Description,
Many people find statistics challenging, but most statistics professors do not. As a result, it is sometimes hard for our professors and the authors of statistics textbooks to make statistics clear and practical for business students, managers, and executives. Business Statistics Demystified fills that gap. We begin slowly, introducing statistical concepts without mathematics. We build step by step, from defining statistics in Part One providing the basic tools for creating and understanding statistical reports in Part Two, introducing the statistical measures commonly—and some not-so-commonly—used in business in Part Three and, in Part Four, applying statistics to practical business situations with forecasting, quality management, and more.

Book Description,
SAS Enterprise Guide provides a graphical user interface to SAS. Because it is so much easier to use and quicker to learn than the traditional programming approach, SAS Enterprise Guide makes the power of SAS available to a much wider range of potential users. The aim of this book is to offer further encouragement to users by showing how to conduct a range of statistical analyses within SAS Enterprise Guide. The emphasis is very much on the practical aspects of the analysis. In each case, one or more real data sets are used. The statistical techniques are briefly introduced and their rationale explained. They are then applied using SAS Enterprise Guide, and the output is explained. No SAS programming is needed, only the usual Windows point-and-click operations are used and even typing is kept to a bare minimum.

Book Description,
How should we use data to help us analyse our beliefs? This book is concerned with the subjectivist analysis of uncertainty, and develops methods that combine prior judgements with information derived from relevant data. Whenever we move from broadly data-focused questions, such as ‘Does this data set suggest that a certain medical treatment is likely to be effective?’, to broadly decision-motivated questions, such as ‘Are we sufficiently confident, given all that we know about this treatment, to recommend its widespread use?’, then we must make such a synthesis of data with more generalized forms of information. Because we may find this hard to achieve, we need some methodology to help us. This methodology should be clear, helpful, logically well founded and tractable.

Boca Raton, FL 33487-2742
International Standard Book Number-13: 978-0-8493-5019-1

Book Description,
The whole range of steel thermal processing technology, from casting and plastic forming to
welding and heat treatment, not only produces workpieces of the required shape but also optimizes the end-product microstructure. Thermal processing thus plays a central role in quality control, service life, and the ultimate reliability of engineering components, and now represents a fundamental element of any company’s competitive capability. Substantial advances in research, toward increasingly accurate prediction of the microstructure and properties of workpieces produced by thermal processing, were based on solutions of partial differential equations (PDEs) for temperature, concentration, electromagnetic properties, and stress and strain phenomena. Until the widespread use of high-performance computers, analytical solution of PDEs was the only approach to describe these parameters, and this placed severe limitations in terms of prediction for engineering applications so that thermal process developments themselves relied on empiricism and traditional practice. The level of inaccuracy inherent in computational predictions hindered both materials performance improvements and process cost reduction.

John Wiley & Sons Ltd, The Atrium, Southern Gate,
Chichester,West Sussex PO19 8SQ, England
ISBN-13: 978-0-470-02742-4
Copyright C 2007

Book Description,
This book deals with the art and science of power system engineering for those engineers who work in electricity-related industries such as power utilities, manufacturing enterprises, engineering companies, or for students of electrical engineering in universities and colleges. Each engineer’s relationship with power system engineering is extremely varied, depending on the types of companies they work for and their positions. We expect readers to study the characteristics of power systems theoretically as a multi-dimensional concept by means of this book, regardless of readers’ business roles or specialties. We have endeavoured to deal with the following three points as major features of the book: First, as listed in the Contents, the book covers the theories of several subsystems, such as generating plants, transmission lines and substations, total network control, equipment-based local control, protection, and so on, as well as phenomena ranging from power (fundamental) frequency to lightning and switching surges, as the integrally unified art and science of power systems. Any equipment in a power system network plays its role by closely linking with all other equipment, and any theory, technology or phenomenon of one network is only a viewpoint of the profound dynamic behaviour of the network. This is the reason why we have covered different categories of theories combined in a single hierarchy in this book.

Book Description,
The individuals who have written this book represent a superior group of professionals who not only have great knowledge, but also are willing to dedicate many hours of their time to share it with the industry. Many companies were involved in creating this book, and some of the work was done ‘‘on company time.’’ However, the authors dedicated many hours of weekend and holiday time to create this book. The committee has never requested funds from any of the sponsors. All of the work (cost of meetings, preparation of manuscripts, etc.) was supported financially by individuals and some of the companies involved. No royalty was ever accepted for any of the books. Many in this unusual group of individuals have worked together on this committee for many years. Several recently joined to further enhance the prestige of this group of authors. As an interesting fact, Bill Rehm joined the IADC committee when it was organized in the early 1970s, and had to resign because of work assignments. However, he has now returned to the group, with great expertise in underbalanced drilling, to enhance this book.

Book Description,
The last few years have seen enormous change within the credit markets posing considerable challenges to the author. Not least amongst these is to distinguish between long-term structures and short-term trends. In particular, we have recently seen concerted efforts to develop a secondary market in tranched products, together with any number of portfolio models to assess their risk characteristics. Rather the attempt has been to take a step back and to develop on themes common to all types of credit exposure. The convergence of the loan and traditional fixed income credit business, due in part to reasonable quantitative modelling, has made this a worthwhile exercise. Consequently, rather than elaborating upon disparate portfolio models the text focuses on underlying structural models and their application within the industry.

Book Description,
Welcome to the world of operations management. Most of us probably think of operations management as having little to do with our lives and work, but each of us comes constantly into contact with aspects of operations management every day.

The purpose of this chapter is to explore the nature of operations and operations management today, and to:
- Define operations, operations management, and operations managers
- Explore the history and context today of operations management
- Introduce you to the key concepts and ideas that this book will cover.

After reading this chapter, you will be able to:
- Describe the role of operations in different sorts of organizations
- Show how operations management is relevant to organizations, managers and individuals
- Explain how operations managers bring together different contributions to satisfy customers.
The next section begins with a formal definition of operations, and then introduces some basic concepts for describing and analysing operations. Next, the roles and responsibilities of operations managers are described more fully. Succeeding sections consider the limits to operations management, its usefulness, and how operations management can help people manage complex organizations in highly competitive environments. The chapter closes with a brief overview of the important themes to be covered in this book, and presents a model for bringing all of these themes together.

Book Description,
The past 30 years have witnessed a dramatic increase in the number and variety of organizations engaged in project-based work. In addition to ‘‘traditional’’ project-oriented industries, like construction, aerospace, and pharmaceuticals, service industries as diverse as finance, utilities, telecommunications, and insurance are beginning to embrace projectbased ventures. This paradigm shift is due to growing recognition that projects and their effective management can provide organizations with a significant competitive edge through cost reduction, enhanced responsiveness, and overall value to customers. Consequently, a number of organizations have adopted many of the well-known techniques of project management, and professional project management organizations have witnessed marked increases in membership.

Book Description,
This book is based on the lecture material for a one-semester senior-year undergraduate or first-year graduate course in optimal control which I have taught at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich) for more than twenty years. The students taking this course are mostly students in mechanical engineering and electrical engineering taking a major in control. But there also are students in computer science and mathematics taking this course for credit. The only prerequisites for this book are: The reader should be familiar with dynamics in general and with the state space description of dynamic systems in particular. Furthermore, the reader should have a fairly sound understanding of differential calculus. The book contains a rather large variety of optimal control problems. Many of these problems are solved completely and in detail in the body of the text. Additional problems are given as exercises at the end of the chapters. The solutions to all of these exercises are sketched in the Solution section at the end of the book.

Book Description,
This booklet provides an overview of basic electrical safety on the job. Electricity is essential to modern life, both at home and on the job. Some employees — engineers, electricians, electronic technicians, and power line workers, among them — work with electricity directly. Others, such as office workers and sales people, work with it indirectly. Perhaps because it has become such a familiar part of our daily life, many of us don’t give much thought to how much our work depends on a reliable source of electricity. More importantly, we tend to overlook the hazards electricity poses and fail to treat it with the respect it deserves.

Book Description,
Controls are poorly understood in our industry. The subject is also disliked in university courses as it can become highly mathematical. It is probably partly due to this lack of appreciation of controls and their commissioning that I have yet to find a building that works properly and satisfies the occupants after it has been commissioned. This Guide is an attempt to redress some of these problems. It explains the topic of controls with the minimum of mathematics. It builds on and updates the earlier 1985 Applications Manual Automatic Building Controls.

BUSINESS PROCESS MANAGEMENT APPLIED

J. Ross Publishing
ISBN 1-932159-33-9
Copyright ©2005 by Charles C. Poirier and Ian Walker

Book Description,
The search for savings and improvements within a business is a never-ending quest. It occupies the minds and energies of virtually every business, at all time, in every type of enterprise. Throughout the world, companies have launched a myriad of efforts to meet this need and to transfer the results of continuous improvement to the profitability of their businesses. During the past two decades, in particular, an ever-increasing number of firms have opted to bring these efforts under an umbrella improvement technique dubbed supply chain. With that orientation, the effort becomes focused on the end-to-end process steps that occur from wherever is the appropriate place to start the chain of supplies or services — through manufacturing, production, or delivery — to final consumption by a business customer or end consumer. When returns are considered as well, this focus is truly across the total processing that could occur from beginning to end of an extended enterprise business system.

HEDGE FUND RISK FUNDAMENTALS

Bloomberg Press, 100 Business Park Drive,
P.O. Box 888, Princeton, NJ 08542-0888 U.S.A.
ISBN 1-57660-163-3

Book Description,
It is strange how many great ideas and relationships happen by being in the right place at the right time. This book is a result of such timing and luck. Last summer, a colleague at Bloomberg, Kathleen Peterson, came to me looking for a current hot topic for the Bloomberg Press financial book series. At the time, I had been having discussions with Richard Horwitz at Kenmar about a new way of providing hedge fund risk reporting through the Bloomberg Professional service. It was a natural to suggest Richard’s “solution” for tracking hedge fund risk as a topic for a book. This is especially true in light of the considerable press coverage surrounding developments emanating out of Washington, D.C. related to hedge fund regulation and transparency. Since Richard together with his colleagues at Kenmar had written several articles on this matter, it seemed logical to pool these ideas, organize and expand the scope, and create this book for publication. Hedge Fund Risk Fundamentals: Solving the Transparency and Risk Management Challenge came together quickly thanks to the tireless efforts of our author Richard and also Kathleen, his editor. Risk management and ultimately transparency constitute an exceedingly timely and critical topic in a period when better information about hedge funds, mutual funds, and general security practices on Wall Street has become a top priority.

Book Description,
This Book,Beyond Change Management wakes leaders and consultants up to what it actually takes to lead and consult to transformational change successfully. This book highlights the missing ingredients in current change management practices and reveals the neglected people and process dynamics that so often cause failure in change. In compelling fashion, the book demonstrates the requirement that leaders become much more conscious of these unseen dynamics, which enables them to create an integrated, process-oriented, change strategy.
The book introduces the new change leadership competency of process thinking and spotlights leaderand employee mindset change as a key driver of successful transformation. Beyond Change Management sets the conceptual stage for the pragmatic guidance offered in the authors’ companion book in this series, The Change Leader’s Roadmap.

ENGLISH GRAMMAR A UNIVERSITY COURSE

Routledge

ISBN10: 0–415–28787–1
ISBN13: 9–78–0–415–28787–6
© 2006 Angela Downing and Philip Locke

Book Description,
The structure of this book remains essentially the same as that of the first edition. The most obvious difference is the collapsing of chapters 11 and 12 into one (adjectival and adverbial groups), leaving 12 (prepositions and the prepositional phrase) as the final chapter. Following the welcome feedback from reviewers and consultants, there has also been some rearrangement of the material: in particular, the section on negation has been brought forward to Chapter 1, and the syntax of prepositional and phrasal verbs is made more explicit in Chapter 2. Chapter 5 has also been rearranged, in order to clarify the correspondences between clause types and their speech act functions. Some of the modules have been considerably rewritten, in order to accomodate the description of certain elements that had not been dealt with. Still others were partly rewritten in order to incorporate certain insights and research findings published since 1990 or, if earlier, not included in the first edition. The motion event analysis in Chapter 8 is one of these, and the semantics of prepositions in Chapter 12 is another. A few analytical changes have been made, notably the re-analysis of those features that were grouped together under the function labelled ‘predicator complement’. This re-analysis has been made possible by a clearer specification of the criteria adopted for the classification of clause constituents.

Fresh-caught fish, tender roast beef, rich scones and shortbread— these are just a few of the varied foods that make up the cooking of England. Although most English food is not spicy or unusual, it is hearty and delicious. It relies on fresh, simple ingredients prepared to highlight the natural flavors of foods. Book Description,
The aim of Apoptosis, Cell Signaling, and Human Diseases: Molecular Mechanisms is to present recent developments in cell survival and apoptotic pathways and their involvement in human diseases, such as cancers and neurodegenerative disorders. This requires an integration of knowledge from several fields of research, including pathology, genetics, virology, cell biology, medicine, immunology, and molecular biology. This edition of the book examines the impact of molecular biology on disease mechanisms. With recent advances in technology such as microarray and proteomics, new biomarkers and molecular targets have been identified. These potential targets will be very useful for the development of novel and more effective drugs for the treatment of human diseases. The challenge now is not only to understand disease mechanisms but also to apply this knowledge to find therapies that are more effective.

Book Description,
Limited scientifi c collaborations have been conducted historically between immunologists, geneticists, and cell biologists who study cancer. This situation is beginning to change with an emerging consensus among all cancer researchers that infl ammation and immune escape play key causal roles in the development and progression of malignancies. This fi nding is particularly true for adult solid tumors, the causes of which are complex and multifactoral, posing a major clinical challenge. This book aims at cross-fertilizing ideas and concepts among investigators who are striving to develop combinatorial immunological or pharmacological agents as cancer therapeutics.

AFTER CANCER TREATMENT

Johns Hopkins University Press
ISBN 0-8018-8437-3
© 2006 The Johns Hopkins University Press

Book Description,
Each time I have written a book, many people have helped in the publishing process. With this book, however, I received more than publishing assistance. My family, friends, colleagues, doctors, and other health care providers all facilitated my recovery and, in turn, my ability to write this book. They selfl essly gave me their time, attention, and knowledge. It is impossible to overstate the value of loved ones during a cancer experience. My husband, children, mother, brother, and sister provided amazing support and nurturing. My in-laws and friends picked up the pieces of a life temporarily shattered. My neighbors designed a Web site in which they tracked my treatment and when I would need help. They provided carpooling, meals, and so much more. I am eternally grateful to them. My colleagues at work also sent meals and gifts for my children and stood by me during this diffi cult period. My children’s teachers and the mothers of some of their classmates watched over my children at school and helped them (and
me) immensely. And of course I am indebted to the doctors, nurses, and other health care providers whose knowledge, skill, and empathy made my recovery possible.

Book Description,
The purpose of this book is to contribute to an understanding of the growth arrest and cell death pathways mediating the response to chemotherapy in tumor cells. The book is divided into six sections. The first reviews the major cell death pathways. The second develops the themes of telomeres, telomerase, and senescence in genetic stability and tumorigenesis. The third provides an in-depth dissection of the critical DNA damage and response signaling pathways. The fourth deals with the fundamental limitations on therapy conferred by drug resistance, as well as current approaches to circumvent or attenuate drug resistance. The fifth and sixth sections provide an analysis of our understanding of the responses to both conventional strategies and newly developed therapies against cancer.

NUTRITION AND CANCER PREVENTION

Taylor & Francis Group, LLC
ISBN 0-8493-3945-6
© 2006 by Taylor & Francis Group, LLC

Book Description,
Nutrition plays an essential role in health and in the prevention of disease, including cancer. Epidemiological studies have estimated that approximately 35% of cancers are potentially avoidable by nutritional modification. These modificationsinclude strategies such as caloric restriction and limitation of specific macronutrient groups. However, as this book reports, there is compelling evidence that essential foods contain micronutrient factors that confer protection from cancers, pecifically the common cancers of the colon, breast, and prostate. In Nutrition and Cancer Prevention, the top experts in the field present analyses of specific dietary components that may offer protection from common cancers. The book organizes these dietary components into the general classes of vitamins, minerals, phytosterols, polyphenols, isothiocyanates, saponins, and specialized lipids.

Book Description,
This book is an introduction to international economics, intended for students who are taking their first course in the subject. The level of exposition requires as a background no more than a standard introductory course in the principles of economics. Those who have had intermediate micro and macro theory will find that background useful, but where the tools of intermediate theory are necessary in this book they are taught within the text. The primary purpose of this book is to present a clear, straightforward, and current account of the main topics in international economics. We have tried to keep the student’s perspective constantly in mind and to make the explanations both intuitively appealing and rigorous.

John Wiley & Sons Ltd
ISBN 0-470-84572-4
Copyright C 2004

Book Description,
The plan of this book is simple. After introducing the participants in a restructured electricity supply industry, we discuss the concepts from microeconomics that are essential for the understanding of electricity markets. We then move on to the analysis of the operation of power systems in a competitive environment. To keep matters simple, we begin by ignoring the transmission network and we consider the operation of pure energy markets. We then discuss power system security and the effects that networks have on electricity prices. Finally, in the last two chapters, we address the issue of investments in power generation and transmission equipment in a competitive environment.

Book Description,
THIS BOOK may carry my name alone, but its contents were shaped also by the contributions and insights of the various collaborators I have been lucky to work with in recent years. It is a pleasant duty to acknowledge them here (in alphabetical order): Ricardo Hausmann, Murat Iyigun, Robert Lawrence, Sharun Mukand, Lant Pritchett, Francisco Rodriguez, Andrés Rodríguez-Clare, Arvind Subramanian, Roberto Unger, and Andres Velasco. They have influenced my thinking in diverse and often subtle ways—sometimes through an offhand remark and at other times through an extended discussion. But brainstorming with them on the issues covered in these pages has been the highlight of my academic career, for which I am deeply grateful.
