Book Description,
The inspiration for this basic science series originated at an educational retreat led by Dr. Maximilian Buja, who at that time was Dean of the Medical School. It has been a joy to work with Dr. Margaret Uthman and her husband, Dr. Ed Uthman, and Dr. Earl J. Brown who are accomplished mentors, scientists, and teachers. Likewise, I would like to thank the hard work of the other contributors. I especially thank Alaina Johnson, a fourth year medical student, for her time and expertise in helping to edit this book, adding high yield tables and reviewing the manuscript for readability.

Kluwer Academic Publishers
eBook ISBN: 0-306-47575-8
Print ISBN: 0-7923-7542-4

Book Description,
Autopsy derives from the greek word autopsia, which means act of seeing with one’s own eyes. It remains the most objective and accurate method to understand human.disease. Unfortunately, the volume of autopsies in teaching hospitals has decreased dramatically over the past years. The crucial factors that account for this are the recent progress and development of new technologies, especially in diagnostic imaging, immunology, cell biology and genetics. Additionally, the perpetual fear of legal liability by physicians accounts for its further decline. Consequently, physicians and medical students are engaged in fewer autopsies and are not reaping the rich educational rewards that accompany these examinations. The purpose of the autopsy is not only to establish the cause of death, but also to determine the nature and course of the disease process. Our goal with this book is to emphasize the importance of the post-mortem exam and the correlation between pathologic material and clinical data by analyzing actual cases with problem-based methodology. The focus of this handbook is on cardiovascular disease, and when appropriate, other disease categories are included if they have an impact on cardiovascular function.

Book Description,
The study of pathology, a science so basic to clinical medicine, has been abbreviated sadly in many medical schools in recent years, and at a time when explosive growth is occurring in the science. Recent advances in immunopathology, diagnosis of bacterial and viral diseases including AIDS, and detection of infectious agents such as papillomavirus in cervical dysplasia are proceeding at a tremendous rate. The tenth edition of Pathology: PreTest® Self-Assessment and Review includes such new subject areas as predictive values in the interpretation of laboratory data, the importance of cytokines, the molecular basis of genetic and other disease processes, and molecular biology techniques as these apply to lymphoproliferative disorders and other tumors.

Book Description,
Each kidney weighs approximately 150 g in adults, with ranges of 125 to 175 g for men and 115 to 155 g for women; both together represent 0.4% of the total body weight. Each kidney is supplied by a single renal artery originating from the abdominal aorta; the main renal artery branches to form anterior and posterior divisions at the hilus and divides further, its branches penetrating the renal substance proper as interlobar arteries, which course between lobes. Interlobar arteries extend to the corticomedullary junction and give rise to arcuate arteries, which arch between cortex and medulla and course roughly perpendicular to interlobar arteries.
Interlobular arteries, branches of arcuate arteries, run perpendicular to the arcuate arteries and extend through the cortex toward the capsule (Fig. 1.1). Afferent arterioles branch from the interlobular arteries and give rise to glomerular capillaries (Fig. 1.2). A glomerulus represents a spherical bag of capillary loops arranged in several lobules (Fig. 1.3); the capillaries merge to exit the glomerulus as efferent arterioles, which, in most nephrons, branch to form another vascular bed, peritubular or interstitial capillaries, which surround tubules.

Book Description,
Digital signal processing (DSP) can be considered simply to be the capture, analysis and manipulation of an analog signal by a digital computer. The integration of DSP software and hardware into products across a wide range of industries has necessitated the understanding and application of DSP by engineers and technicians. The aim of this book is to introduce DSP from a practical point of view using a minimum of mathematics. The emphasis is on the practical aspects of DSP, implementation issues, tips and tricks and pitfalls and practical applications. Intuitive explanations and appropriate examples are used to develop a fundamental understanding of DSP theory. The coverage in the book is fairly broad from process control to communications.

FOUDATIONS OF COGNETIVE PSYCHOLOGY

Mitt Press
BookDescription,
Today there are many excellent textbooks and readers devoted to cognition. Textbooks are valuable because they select and organize a daunting amount of information and cover the essential points of a topic. The disadvantage is that they do not reflect how psychologists learn about new research—this is most often done through journal articles or ‘‘high-level’’ book chapters directed to the working researcher. More technical in nature, these sources typically reveal details of an experiment’s design, the measures used, and how the findings are interpreted. They also reveal some of the inherent ambiguity in research (often hidden in a textbook’s tidy summary). Frequently students, when confronted with the actual data of a study, find alternate interpretations of the findings, and come to discover firsthand that researchers are often forced to draw their own conclusions. By the time undergraduates take a course in cognition (usually their second or third course in psychology) they find themselves wondering if they ou ght to major in psychology, and a few even think about going to graduate school. I believe they ought to know more about what it is like to read actual psychology articles, so they’ll know what they’re getting into.

Book Description,
This book cannot be digested by merely scanning the pages. It is meant for the person who is serious about becoming more informed on many selected topics related to sport psychology and who wants to be challenged and stimulated by the scholarly and scientific nature of the field. Every theme may not interest the reader, at least in a first glance at the table of contents. Sometimes, however, following up on themes of less initial interest can be transformative in terms of expanded knowledge and appreciation of contributions in the area. In fact, further research may, serendipitously, be the result of these forays. With all my travels to other countries, I have been continually amazed to see copies of the previous Handbooks in the offices of dedicated sport psychologists. No doubt, the same will be true about this edition.

HANDBOOK OF THE PSYCHOLOGY OF RELIGION AND SPIRITUALITY

The Guilford Press
A Division of Guilford Publications, Inc.
72 Spring Street, New York, NY 10012
ISBN 1-57230-922-9
©2005 The Guilford Press

Book Description,
As with any creative work, we had a mix of professional and personal reasons for working together to create this handbook. The compelling scholarly reason was that the time for it had come. From time to time, in any area of inquiry, the accumulated knowledge progresses to such a degree that a new level of maturity becomes identifiable. The psychology of religion is at this stage now. We see it reflected in the nature of the research questions asked, the range of topics investigated, the sophistication of the research methods used, the adequacy of the theoretical advancements to account for and integrate the increasing body of data, and the connections between research in the psychology of religion and scholarship in other areas of psychology and allied fields. Throughout this volume, the contributors document myriad indicators that the psychology of religion as a field has reached this level of maturity. One indicator is that many of our colleagues now call this area of research “the psychology of religion and spirituality.” We hope this book firmly documents this maturity and serves to guide research and theory in this field to its next level of development.

B2B BRAND MANAGEMENT

Springer Berlin Heidelberg,New York
ISBN-10 3-540-25360-2
C Springer Berlin - Heidenberg 2006

Book Description,
This book aims to put B2B brands and branding into their actual context. It describes current thinking and best practice, draws comparisons and highlights differences to B2C, and ventures thoughts about the future of B2B. Branding is not only about creating fancy names and logos. To
equate branding with such superficial cosmetic effort is like judging a book merely by its colorful cover. It is absolutely crucial to understand that there is more to brands than meet the eye. Just take one moment and try to imagine a world without brands. There would be no Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Volvo, Chrysler, and no Ford, just a variety of automobiles that are more or less alike. Which would you buy? Which company would you trust? On which attributes would you make your purchasing decision? Such a world would lack much more than just fancy brand names and logos – it would lack one of the most important factors that simplify our life in an increasingly complex environment: Orientation. Brands differentiate, reduce risk and complexity, and communicate the benefits and value a product or service can provide. This is just as true in B2B as it is in B2C!

Book Description,
Money management may very well be the most dramatically important piece of the trading success puzzle. The fact that many a sizable fortune (including a couple of small fortunes of my own) have been lost due to the lack of some simple risk control procedures is proof enough for me that this is important stuff. And yet time and time again, I am reminded that the general population is just not in love with this subject matter. My very own experience reflects this phenomenon, since money management did not take precedence in my career until after my concentration on trade selections and entries were distracted by a couple of huge losses.

Book Description,
The articles brought together in this volume are all concerned in one way or another with Aristotle’s practical side, i.e., his moral psychology, his ethical and political thought, and his writings on rhetorical persuasion. The articles number twenty-four and were written over more than four decades. Each has benefited from the helpful criticism of some colleague, interested scholar or anonymous referee. I cannot begin to thank all these individuals by name; indeed, in the case of an anonymous referee, the identity of the individual remains unknown.

225 Wildwood Avenue, Woburn, MA 01801-2041
ISBN 0 7506 5213 6
© Richard Gentle, Peter Edwards and Bill Bolton 2001

Book Description,
This motivation for this series of books was born out of the desire of the UK’s Engineering Council to increase the number of incorporated engineers graduating from Higher Education establishments, and the Institution of Incorporated Engineers’ (IIE) aim to provide enhanced services to those delivering Incorporated Engineering Courses.
The philosophy is to provide a series of complementary texts which can be tailored to the actual courses being run – allowing the flexibility for course designers to take into account ‘local’ issues, such as areas of particular staff expertise and interest, while being able to demonstrate the depth and breadth of course material referenced to a common framework. The series is designed to cover material in the core texts which approximately corresponds to the first year of study with module texts focussing on individual topics to second and final year level. While the general structure of each of the texts is common, the styles are quite different, reflecting best practice in their areas. For example Mechanical Engineering Systems adopts a ‘tell – show – do’ approach, allowing students to work independently as well as in class, whereas Business Skills for Engineers and Technologists adopts a ‘framework’ approach, setting the context and boundaries and providing opportunities for discussion.
