PROJECT MANAGEMANT USING A PROJECT MANAGEMENT MATURITY MODEL

John Wiley & Sons.
ISBN 0-471-40039-4
Copyright © 2001 by John Wiley & Sons. All rights reserved.

Book Description,
Excellence in project management cannot occur, at least not within a reasonable time frame, without some form of strategic planning for project management. Although the principles of strategic planning have been known for several decades, an understanding of their applicability to project management is relatively new. Today, as more companies recognize the benefits that project management can provide to their “bottom line,” the need for strategic planning for project management has been identified as a high priority. This book is broken down into two major parts. The first part, Chapters 1 to 3, discusses the principles of strategic planning and how it relates to project management. The second part, Chapters 4 to 10, details the project management maturity model (PMMM), which will provide organizations with general guidance on how to perform strategic planning for project management. The various levels, or stages of development, for achieving project management maturity, and the accompanying assessment instruments, can be used to validate how far along the maturity curve the organization has progressed.

INSTANT NOTES IMORGANIC CHEMISTRY

BIOS Scientific Publishers
ISBN 0-203-48827-X
© Garland Science/BIOS Scientific Publishers, 2004

Book Description,
Inorganic chemistry is concerned with the chemical elements (of which there are about 100) and the extremely varied compounds they form. The essentially descriptive subject matter is unified by some general concepts of structure, bonding and reactivity, and most especially by the periodic table and its underlying basis in atomic structure. As with other books in the Instant Notes series, the present account is intended to provide a concise summary of the core material that might be covered in the first and second years of a degree-level course. The division into short independent topics should make it easy for students and teachers to select the material they require for their particular course. Sections A–E discuss the general concepts of atomic structure, periodicity, structure and bonding, and solution chemistry. The following Sections F–I cover different areas of the periodic table in a more descriptive way, although in Section H some concepts that are peculiar to the study of transition metals are also discussed. The final section describes some aspects of inorganic chemistry in the world outside the laboratory.

PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY

John Wiley & Sons Ltd,
ISBN 0-471-49180-2 (acid-free paper)
ISBN 0-471-49181-0 (pbk)
Copyright C 2004

Book Description,
Some people make physical chemistry sound more confusing than it really is. One of their best tricks is to define it inaccurately, saying it is ‘the physics of chemicals’. This definition is sometimes quite good, since it suggests we look at a chemical system and ascertain how it follows the laws of nature. This is true, but it suggests that chemistry is merely a sub-branch of physics; and the notoriously mathematical nature of physics impels us to avoid this otherwise useful way of looking at physical chemistry. An alternative and more user-friendly definition tells us that physical chemistry supplies ‘the laws of chemistry’, and is an addition to the making of chemicals. This is a superior lens through which to view our topic because we avoid the bitter aftertaste of pure physics, and start to look more closely at physical chemistry as an applied science: we do not look at the topic merely for the sake of looking, but because there are real-life situations requiring a scientific explanation.

MEANING MEDICINE AND THE PLACEBO EFFECT

Cambridge University Press

Book Description,
Although the use of inert medications, “placebos,” can informus about many fascinating aspects of human cultural and biological life, I hope that a close reader of this book will see that it is not really about the placebo effect.
It is about the interaction of biology and meaning in human life (which accounts for portions of what is usually called the placebo effect.) Human beings are uniquely “cultural animals.” That phrase is, on its face, an oxymoron, a contradiction in terms. But close consideration shows that what we think, say, and know about the world can have a dramatic influence on our biology, as culture and biology overlap in powerful and important ways.

Book Description,
In my industrial career, I have gained broad experience working on many different pharmaceutical development projects and dosage forms, spanning candidate drug selection through technology transfer to production and subsequent launch.
With this background and with Gerry Steele’s encouragement and rich experience in preformulation studies, I planned a book that would emphasize what practical studies need to be undertaken, for what reasons and during what key stages of the drug development process. In addition to preformulation, I considered it essential to include biopharmaceutics (an area of emerging importance) as well as formulation aspects. I soon realized I could not commit the time to writing all the chapters in such a book, and, indeed, I considered the book would be more comprehensive by involving other contributors and adding their special knowledge and experiences.

In response to this RFA, we (the authors of this book) collaborated to propose an acupuncture treatment study of major depression in women. Our interest in this grant stemmed from the first author's clinical experience with depressive symptoms in her clients, and from the second author's research interests in risk for depression. Through an interactive writing process, we learned to speak one another's language-learning that sound scientific research need not be incompatible with a flexible individually tailored acupuncture treatment approach. To our delight, our proposal was among the 30 funded proposals and, along with one other proposal, the only proposal to study acupuncture.

Book Description,
The term “food desert” describes neighborhoods and communities that have limited access to affordable and nutritious foods. In the United States, those who live in urban and rurallow-income neighborhoods are less likely to have access to supermarkets or grocery stores that providehealthy food choices. While many food desert studies have focused primarily on their socioeconomic determinants, less is known about their public health impacts—including the prevalence of obesity and the incidence of chronic diseases—on local populations. As part of a year-long congressionally mandated study coordinated by the Economic Research Service (ERS) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) and the National Research Council (NRC) were asked to convene a two-day workshop to understand the public health effects of food deserts. On January 26-27, 2009, workshop speakers provided presentations on how to measure and understand the extent of food deserts, their impact on individual behaviors and health outcomes in various populations, and effective ways to increase the availability of fruits and vegetables and to improve the food environment. Workshop participants also identified areas where additional research could be helpful to inform future efforts to increase the availability of affordable and nutritious foods. It was beyond the workshop’s scope to examine ways to decrease access to unhealthy food options.

Book Descriptuon,
Preventive Nutrition contains important chapters for investigators who are interested in the impact of nutrition on world health in the unique section on Nutrition Transitions Around the World. This section examines the successes and consequent public health implications of national preventive nutrition strategies, not only in the United States and Europe but also in “Westernizing” nations and less developed countries. There are two insightful chapters on the growing presence of obesity in Latin and South America as well as across Asia. The chapters confirm that westernization of eating habits has negatively impacted the health of these nations.
The fourth edition is comprehensive and well organized. The volume is divided into seven sections beginning with an overview of (1) global issues affecting preventive nutrition; (2) cancer prevention; (3) cardiovascular disease prevention; (4) diabetes and obesity; (5) prevention of major disabilities and improvement in health outcomes; (6) optimal pregnancy and infancy outcomes; (7) nutrition transitions around the world. Key Points are included at the beginning of each chapter to help define the chapter’s critical learning points. There is a list of Key Words and the final section provides Recommendations. The fourth edition of Preventive Nutrition continues to include a comprehensive index as well as helpful listings of relevant books, journals, and websites.

Book Description,
Chemical engineers, on the other hand, usually have different training than chemists. Both disciplines require knowledge of chemistry, but the chemical engineer is more concerned with practical applications, and there are differences in novelty and scale.
A chemist is more likely to be developing new compounds and materials; a chemical engineer is more likely to be working with existing substances. A chemist may make a few grams of a new compound, while a chemical engineer will scale up the process to make it by the ton, and at a profit. The chemical engineer will be more concerned with heating and cooling large reaction vessels, pumps and piping to transfer materials, plant design and operation, and process optimization, while a chemist will be more concerned with establishing the details of the reactions before the plant is designed. These differences are generalizations; there is often much overlap.

Book Description,
The pharmacy profession and the role of pharmacists in the modern healthcare systems have evolved quite rapidly over the last couple of decades. The services that pharmacists provide are expanding with the introduction of supplementary prescribing, provision of health checks, patient counselling and many others. The main ethos of pharmacy profession is now as much about keeping people healthy as treating them when they are not well. The modern pharmacy profession is shifting away from a product focus and towards a patient focus. To cope with these changes, and to meet the demand of the modern pharmacy profession, the pharmacy curriculum, especially in the developed world, has evolved significantly. In the western countries, almost all registered pharmacists are employed by the community and hospital pharmacies.

PHARMACY MANAGEMENT ESSENTIALS FOR ALL PRACTICE SETTINGS

McGraw-Hill Companies, Inc.
DOI: 10.1036/0071494367
Copyright © 2009 by The McGraw-Hill Companies, Inc. All rights reserved.

Book Description,
This textbook is organized to reflect all of the major management functions performed by pharmacists in any practice setting. The book is divided into sections representing each function, and is further divided into chapters that detail the various components of each function. Our experience as educators has taught us that students are the most effective learners when they are “ready” to learn. Many students selected pharmacy as a major in part from the desire to help people, but also due to their fascination and intrigue with how such small amounts of various medicinal substances have such profound effects on the body. Many of these students also believe that they only need to learn about management after they graduate, and then only if they take on a managerial or administrative position at their pharmacy.
The first section of this book makes the case that management skills are important for all people and pharmacists, regardless of their position or practice setting. After establishing the need for management in both our personal and professional lives, the next four sections describe the management functions and resources that are common to all pharmacy practice settings (operations, people, money, traditional pharmacy goods and services). Chapters within each section focus on important aspects of each function or resource.

Book Description,
This handbook is one of a few texts that you will use through your entire pharmacy school education. So take a pencil or pen and start scribbling notes in the margins, keep track of the “pearls” you learn in class here in a book where you can find them later. There is no one right way to use this handbook.
The important thing is that it does not sit on your shelf as a required text, never to be opened. You bought the book; take the time to see what information is contained within. Think of it as your road map to practice courses; calculations, kinetics, drug information, medical terminology, and laboratory data book all in one. The last section of the book contains specific topics for pharmacy practice, including chapters addressing the practices of community and institutional pharmacy, the pharmacist as drug information specialist, managed care, public health, and global pharmacy. These chapters are included to round out the text so that it becomes the student practice guide from beginning to end. The final section touches on topics such as missions and the responsibility to advocate for the profession and advance the pharmacist’s involvement in public health. All of the topics are meant to support the knowledge and professional growth of student pharmacists across a curriculum.

ECONOMICS PRINCIPLES AND APPLICATIONS

Marc Lieberman

Book Description,
Economics. The word conjures up all sorts of images: manic stock traders on Wall Street, an economic summit meeting in a European capital, a somber television news anchor announcing good or bad news about the economy.... You probably hear about economics several times each day. What exactly is economics? First, economics is a social science, so it seeks to explain something about society. In this sense, it has something in common with psychology, sociology, and political science.
But economics is different from these other social sciences, because of what economists study and how they study it. Economists ask fundamentally different questions and they answer them using tools that other social scientists find rather exotic.

Book Description,
New developments in experimental methods are leading to an increasingly detailed description of how networks of interacting neurons process information. These findings strongly suggest that dynamic network behaviors underlie information processing, and that these activity patterns cannot be fully explained by simple concepts such as synchrony and phase locking. These new results raise significant challenges, and at the same time offer exciting opportunities, for experimental and theoretical neuroscientists. Moreover, advances in understanding in this area will require interdisciplinary efforts aimed at developing improved quantitative models that provide new insight into the emergence and function of experimentally observed behaviors and lead to predictions that can guide future experimental investigations.

Book Description,
Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever: A Global Perspective is the first book written which is specifically devoted to CCHF. Our aim in writing this book was to present updated information on several key aspects of the disease and the virus which causes it. CCHF is a global disease, and writing this book was truly an international effort. In total, there are 34 authors from at least 13 different countries who have contributed to this book. These authors are leading scientists in their fields and provide a global perspective on this global disease. There are six main sections in this book. Section I gives an introduction to CCHF and presents a historical background on the disease. Section II discusses the molecular biology and genetics of CCHFV.
Section III is the largest section and discusses the epidemiology and ecology of CCHF, including several chapters focusing on CCHF in individual countries. Section IV describes what is currently known about the clinical features, pathogenesis, and treatment options for CCHF. Section V provides information on the prevention and control of CCHF. Section VI discusses potential areas for future research and includes frequently asked questions that may prove helpful to public health officials or others, who may not be experts on CCHF, but nevertheless may be required to provide information on the disease to the public. We hope that this book will shed light on this viral hemorrhagic disease and provide useful information for all the clinicians, virologists, entomologists, and public health officials who deal with this important disease

ISBN-13: 978-1-4051-3645-7
ISBN-10: 1-4051-3645-6
Sixth edition published 2007 by Blackwell Publishing Ltd

Book Description,
This book, now in its sixth edition, provides a rounded introduction to viruses and the infections that they cause, and is aimed at undergraduate students at all levels and postgraduates wishing to learn about virology for the first time.
It approaches the subject on a concept by concept basis, rather than considering each virus in turn. In this way, the important parallels and contrasts between different viruses and their infections are emphasized. Previous editions have underpinned our own teaching of virology at the University of Warwick for many years and have been widely adopted for undergraduate courses elsewhere. Our aim in writing this new edition has been to cover the breadth of this fascinating and important subject while keeping the text concise and approachable. It is thus suitable for students who may be studying virology as just one among many facets of biology or medicine, as well as for those who intend to focus on the subject in depth. A basic knowledge of cell and molecular biology is assumed, but other topics are introduced progressively in the text and explained as needed. An introduction to immunology is provided as a separate chapter because of its crucial relevance to the understanding of viral disease.

ISBN: 90-5702-251-6 (softcover)
This edition published in the Taylor & Francis e-Library, 2005.

Book Description,
This textbook is primarily intended to provide undergraduate students of pharmacy with a clear and concise account of basic endocrine function and dysfunction, at a level sufficient to meet the requirements of first- or second year qualifying examinations. It is not intended to replace standard texts, but merely to serve as an accompaniment and convenient revision guide. Basic Endocrinology for Students of Pharmacy and Allied Health Sciences is arranged into seven chapters: the first provides a basic introduction to the organization of the endocrine system and the concept of feedback regulation of hormone release. Subsequent sections deal, in turn, with the hormone secretions of each major endocrine gland, covering the mechanisms that control hormone release, the principal actions of the hormones in the body, the most commonly recognised clinical disorders that can arise when hormones are under or oversecreted, and how these disorders may be diagnosed and managed therapeutically. Where effects of hormones or major signs/symptoms of endocrine diseases are described, the text is separated into distinct sections for easier identification.

Book Description,
In this book we seek to approach the architecture-energy combination and its relationship to the environment. There are chapters on thermal comfort, low energy architecture deaUng with various criterion for comfort in different parts of the World. For example in the State of Qatar 50% of the energy used in that country can be saved by using low energy buildings with several measures such as shading, evaporative cooHng, the use of appropriate thermal mass and natural ventilation coupled with radiative cooUng. Contemporary architecture, in some cases, ignores most of these elements and concentrates on using excessive energy to cool or heat buildings.
In the Gulf Region, 70% of the electricity generated is used for cooling the buildings. Other chapters state the principles of thermal comfort, how the thermal exchange takes place between man and the various parts of the building elements. Some authors developed their own models to evaluate such exchange. The bioclimatic concept in Vernacular Architecture was addressed thoroughly in one chapter starting a good comparison between Vernacular and contemporary architecture, then addressing the impact of climate on the building forms.

Book Description,
This book is different because I have tried to offer a comprehensive discussion about a whole range of design perspectives and issues, and I have tried to base design ideas firmly within existing theories about how to design, as well as the evidence from the schemes that I have visited.
This approach is supplemented by links to other authors who have guided me in my thinking, and which could be used as a starting point in any further reading on the topics discussed here. In travelling around looking at and thinking about housing schemes I have been struck by their diversity, and that the schemes often ‘work’ well in certain respects. In general, I would suggest that this book reflects upon three design traditions: north American, northern European and British. I don’t distinguish between these traditions within the book, but instead I suggest that there is something to learn from all of them. The theory helps us to decipher what we might find interesting about any of these schemes, and I have used a wide range of illustrations to help the reader understand what makes these schemes interesting, as well as providing ideas for how we might design in the future.

Book Description,
This book explores how planning and design could be used to support socially diverse places. To understand the possibilities of a design response, I study places that already are socially diverse and suggest ways that the built environment could be leveraged to support their diverse social makeup.
What is the physical context of socially diverse neighborhoods, and what does it mean for the residents who live there? Do diverse places look like Jane Jacobs ’ Greenwich Village, or do they take on a variety of forms? Have these places been responsive to the needs of a diverse neighborhood, in terms of their physical design? What could be the basis of a shared esthetic in diverse places? Given that place-based identity and affection seem so easily associated with ‘ landscapes of privilege ’ and exclusion, how do diverse places find a shared definition of place? Book Description,
Ecological issues and environmental problems have become exceedingly complex. Today, it is hubris to suppose that any single discipline can provide all the solutions for protecting and restoring ecological integrity. We have entered an age where professional humility is the only operational means for approaching environmental understanding and prediction. As a result, socially acceptable and sustainable solutions must be both imaginative and integrative in scope; in other words, garnered through combining insights gleaned from various specialized disciplines, expressed and examined together.
The purpose of the CRC Press series Integrative Studies in Water Management and Land Development is to produce a set of books that transcends the disciplines of science and engineering alone. Instead, these efforts will be truly integrative in their incorporation of additional elements from landscape architecture, land-use planning, economics, education, environmental management, history, and art. The emphasis of the series will be on the breadth of study approach coupled with depth of intellectual vigor required for the investigations undertaken.

LANDSCAPE AND SUSTAINABILITY

Spon Press 11 New Fetter Lane, London EC4P 4EE
ISBN 0-203-99578-3
Taylor & Francis e-Library, 2005

Book Description,
This unique book is about landscape, sustainability and the practices of the professions which plan, design and manage landscapes at many scales and in many locations; urban, surburban and rural. Despite the ubiquity of ‘sustainability’ as a concept, this is the first book to address the relationship between landscape architecture and sustainability in a comprehensive way. Much in the book is underpinned by landscape ecology, in contrast to the idea of landscape as only appealing to the eye or aspiring cerebrally to be fine art. As this book argues, landscape is and must be much more than this; landscape architecture is about making places which are biologically wholesome, socially just and spiritually rewarding. The book argues that the sustainability agenda needs a new mindset among professionals. They need to stop asking first, is it affordable? Is it beautiful? Is it what the client wants? Is it art? Will my colleagues approve? And instead start asking, first and foremost, is it sustainable? The chapters in the book move progressively from theory to practice, from the global to the local scale, and from issues of policy and planning through to detailed design and implementation and on to long-term maintenance and management. The contributors raise a complex array of research, policy and professional issues and agendas to contribute to the necessary ongoing debate about the future of both landscape and sustainability.

During my year as Visiting Professor at the School of Architecture, Florida A&M University inTallahassee, I attended a Fifth Year design review. Within minutes of the opening student presentation and the ensuing debate, there had been an outpouring of architectural terms including ‘co-mingling space’, ‘layering’, ‘articulate’ and ‘transition’. It was then that my eyes met the quizzical look on the face of my colleague for the day— visiting critic and practising architect, Mark A.Tarmey. With raised eyebrows he said: ‘Fine, but what does it all mean?’. It was amid the ensuing howls of laughter from both students and tutors that the idea for Archispeak was born. During the design review, I began a compilation of a growing list of architectural jargon terms—a list that has continued to expand ever since. What began with a sense of fun has continued with the help of colleagues at the School in Tallahassee and at the Oxford School of Architecture. While confirming that the currency of Archispeak, apart from some slight differences in meaning, is international in its usage, and with a Little help from friends in the Faculty of Architecture at TU University, Delft, what follows forms a personal bridge between the institutions and the countries in which I have spent much of my teaching life.

ARCHITECT'S LEGAL HANDBOOK

Architectural Press

Book Desciption,
This book is not intended to turn architects into fully fledged legal advisers. What we hope is that it will identify for architects the legal issues affecting their work, and alert them to the circumstances in which legal advice is necessary. Unrealistic as many of us may consider the law’s standard to be, the hard reality is that judges expect architects either to know a good deal of law themselves, or else regularly to call on legal advice. In Robert Morgan v Jervis (2003) the Court of Appeal held that an architect might commit a negligent breach of duty if he failed to inform a client when a Construction Act withholding notice was needed.

THE ART OF CITY MAKING

Book Description,
The city is an interconnected whole. It cannot be viewed as merely a series of elements, although each element is important in its own right. When we consider a constituent part we cannot ignore its relation to the rest. The building speaks to its neighbouring building and to the street, and the street in turn helps fashion its neighbourhood. Infused throughout are the people who populate the city. They mould the physical into shape and frame its use and how it feels. The city comprises both hard and soft infrastructure. The hard is like the bone structure, the skeleton, while the soft is akin to the nervous system and its synapses. One cannot exist without the other.

HISTOLOGIC BASIS OF MOUSE ENDOCRINE SYSTEM DEVELOPMENT

CRC Press

Boca Raton, FL 33487-2742
ISBN 978-1-4200-8818-2
© 2010 by Taylor and Francis Group, LLC

Book Describtion,
Unfortunately, the technology at the time was black-and-white photomicrographs and line diagrams. While these are superb, they are small and do not provide the detail needed by today’s mouse pathologists. To address this problem, we took advantage of the new digital “virtual slide” technology to scan the best images in Dr. Kaufman’s collection to generate color images at various magnifications. While the focus of this book is on comparative embryology of the endocrine organs, the embryonic images at various developmental stages contain many other organs.
The representative images are provided in the text for orientation and reference. The accompanying DVD designed by Dr. Nikitin provides the virtual slides that can be viewed on your computer screen in color and at various magnifications. Installing the ImageScope™ software (Aperio Technologies, Inc.) to access the files turns your computer into a “virtual microscope” where the image from the glass microscope slide can be moved across the screen and areas of interest enlarged for more detailed evaluation.
This tool allows the reader to look at specific organs or structures at various magnifications at different stages of embryogenesis, making this a unique tool to help identify structures in normal mouse embryos while comparingwith embryos under investigation.
The text integrates historical perspectives of embryogenesis of the endocrine system between many species, but primarily between humans and mice. The digital images focus entirely on the mouse as this is intended to be an adjunct to assist with analysis of genetically engineered mice with embryonic abnormalities.

Book Description,
Shiatsu is a unique form of bodywork. It requires no special tools, lubricants, or equipment. It can be performed virtually anywhere. When shiatsu is done properly, both the practitioner and the recipient feel calm, balanced, and energized afterward. With its roots in the ancient beginnings of humankind, it is yet adaptable to the needs of modern society, basically because it involves simple human to human contact in an increasingly complex world. At fi rst glance, shiatsu may be seen as only a series of techniques, and once a practitioner has learned a routine, that is suffi cient.
The strength of the shiatsu treatment, however, is the practitioner’sknowledge base. Th e aim of this book is to provide that knowledge base and methods used inshiatsu. In other words, this book aims to bridge theory and technique.

Book Description,
This book was written primarily for the undergraduate therapeutic radiographer, but it is hoped that medical physicists, nurses and clinical oncologists will also fi nd it useful. Our main aims for the book were to fulfi l a current need for such a text and to produce a ‘reader-friendly’ book on radiotherapy physics and equipment. The book is intended to complement others currently on the market in order to provide the undergraduate with a broad and comprehensive database. Each chapter offers a ‘further reading’ section and so aims to provide a coherent whole on any particular subject.

LUNG MECHANICS

Cambridge University Press, New York
ISBN-13 978-0-511-59547-9
ISBN-13 978-0-521-50960-2
© J. Bates 2009

Book Description,
This book focuses on inverse models of lung mechanics, and is organized around the principle that these models can be arranged in a hierarchy of complexity. Chapter 1 expands on this concept and introduces the adjunct notion of forward modeling. It also sets the scene with a brief overview of pulmonary physiology in general. Chapter 2 attends to the fact that all the mathematical modeling skill in the world is for nought without good experimental data. Accordingly, this chapter is devoted to the key experimental methodologies that have provided the data on which the models described in subsequent chapters are based. It can thus be skipped without loss of continuity and referred back to when issues related to experimental validation of models arise. The discussion of inverse lung models begins in earnest in Chapter 3, which develops the theory behind the simplest plausible physiological model of all – a single elastic compartment served by a single flow-resistive airway.

Book Description,
Based on our experience of teaching undergraduates and postgraduates it became clear that no single current resource covered in detail the cellular and molecular changes that give rise to cancer alongside the basic principles of biology without which these can not be readily understood.
The book then gives a description of cancer diagnosis, treatment and care of cancer patients, essential not only to medical students and oncologists, but also important for cancer researchers and biology students who need to have a broader view of cancer and its impact. Finally, Chapter 18 describes the application of new technology in cancer research. This textbook can be used by undergraduates in biology and medical students and can be used in cancer biology courses structured either for a quarter or semester system.

Book Description,
Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) is a complex family of malignancies for which we need new treatment concepts and agents in order to increase the cure rates for all who suffer with these diseases. On the clinical level, AML is an important and devastating malignancy that affects all ages. On a biologicalleve1, AML is an outstanding model for understanding cancer biology and the challenges of cancer therapy in general. The aim of Acute Myelogenous Leukemia is to bring new concepts and findings in the basic and clinical science of AML together "under one cover." This juxtaposition should serve basic and clinical investigators who are interested in AML with information that reaches from new concepts regarding leukemia pathogenesis to current and prospective advances in molecular therapeutics. This is the theme of Ravandi and Giles' overview chapter-the bidirectional flow of knowledge between the clinic and the laboratory, with the overarching goal of increasing AML cure rates.

LEADING HIGH-PERFORMANCE PROJECT

J. Ross Publishing, Inc.
ISBN 1-932159-10-X
Copyright ©2004 by J. Ross Publishing, Inc.

Book Description,
Project management keeps gaining in popularity and the interest in relevant seminars and literature abounds. Silver bullets, from software to methodologies, hit the market with promises of success. Still, projects seem to have just about the same results: missed dates, budgets exceeded, and poor quality. The key question, of course, is why. Ironically, what is needed, I believe, is not more seminars or silver bullets. Although project performance has improved to some degree, the real secret is not a new tool, technique, technology, or methodology, but something less tangible but all to obvious when missing — leadership. As a project manager, it has been my experience over the years that the real ingredient for successful projects is project leadership, not more project management.
As an officer in the U.S. Army, under the now-famous General Norman Schwarzkopf, I learned some key principles of management that have helped me throughout the years to lead and manage projects. From that point onward, I experienced bruises and injuries in the corporate world which also provided me with the insights that have proven valuable in my career as a project management professional and, more importantly, as a project leader.

AGILE PROJECT MANAGEMENT

American Management Association,
1601 Broadway, New York, NY 10019.
ISBN 0-8144-7176-5
C 2004 Gary L. Chin. All rights reserved.

Book Description,
Modern project management, as developed in the post–World War II era, was initially employed to manage large government projects for the military and construction and space industries. It has subsequently evolved and been widely adopted in some form by most large commercial companies. Nowadays, these same project management techniques are well on their way into many medium and small companies. However, as you may guess, what works well for a huge government project may not be the optimal solution for an innovative startup or even a smaller entrepreneurial group within a large company. Those early projects had many unique challenges, such as efficiently managing hundreds of subcontractors, that project management was able to address. The ability to meet these challenges created the momentum that carried project management into the mainstream.

ISBN 0-471-26899-2
Copyright © 2003 by John Wiley & Sons, Inc. All rights reserved.

Book Description,
This book is intended for the leaders of this emerging entity known as the project-based organization. CIOs, department managers, program managers, and senior project managers being challenged to implement project management— to formalize the processes of managing projects—will find strategies and standards for leveraging the proven discipline of project management. The discipline of project management is well developed.
There exist, literally, hundreds of books intended to help us better manage a project. The body of knowledge for managing a multiproject organization is far less developed. This book, intended as a resource for leaders of the project-based organization, must address both topics. It is impossible for a CIO, engineering director, vice-president of new product development, or owner of a construction or consulting firm to optimize their organization’s project performance if she or he cannot speak the language of project management.

THE ECONOMICS OF FINANCIAL MARKETS

Cambridge University Press
The Edinburgh Building, Cambridge, UK
ISBN 978-0-521-61280-7
© R. E. Bailey 2005

Book Description,
This book evolved, over more years than the author cares to admit, from lecture notes for a course in financial economics taught at the University of Essex. For reasons of space, one topic – corporate finance – has been omitted from the book, though its core insight – the Modigliani–Miller theorem – is slipped in under options (chapter 18, section 6). While the chapters are intended to follow a logical sequence, pedagogy may require a different order. Any such tensions should be straightforward to resolve. For example, chapter 2 (market microstructure) appears early but was covered later in the course. Other changes of the order in which the chapters are studied should be easy to implement.
