Book Description,
Although the use of inert medications, “placebos,” can informus about many fascinating aspects of human cultural and biological life, I hope that a close reader of this book will see that it is not really about the placebo effect.
It is about the interaction of biology and meaning in human life (which accounts for portions of what is usually called the placebo effect.) Human beings are uniquely “cultural animals.” That phrase is, on its face, an oxymoron, a contradiction in terms. But close consideration shows that what we think, say, and know about the world can have a dramatic influence on our biology, as culture and biology overlap in powerful and important ways.
