In response to this RFA, we (the authors of this book) collaborated to propose an acupuncture treatment study of major depression in women. Our interest in this grant stemmed from the first author's clinical experience with depressive symptoms in her clients, and from the second author's research interests in risk for depression. Through an interactive writing process, we learned to speak one another's language-learning that sound scientific research need not be incompatible with a flexible individually tailored acupuncture treatment approach. To our delight, our proposal was among the 30 funded proposals and, along with one other proposal, the only proposal to study acupuncture.
